3D Secure 2.0
3D Secure 2 is a significant advancement in online payment security, providing enhanced authentication and improved user experience for online transactions.
What is 3D Secure 2.0
The improvement in 3DS acceptance is great news for merchants. Developed and owned by EMV, 3D Secure 2.0 (3DS2) is designed to improve upon the 3D Secure 1 (3DS1) by addressing the old protocol’s pain points and delivering a much smoother user experience. With 3DS2’s frictionless flow, cardholders can authenticate themselves without being challenged. The quick and painless checkout process will benefit cardholders, while merchants can expect up to 66% lower cart abandonment rates, according to Visa.
Benefits of 3D Secure 2.0
Frictionless Flow: By performing risk-based authentication in the access control server (ACS), issuers are now able to approve a transaction without the need for input from the cardholder. That means no more annoying pop-up windows, and having to remember static passwords, removing friction from the checkout process; hence “frictionless flow”.
Non-Payment Authentication: With the addition of “Non-payment authentication”, the cardholder can be authenticated even without them making a purchase. This is extremely useful for adding credit cards to e-wallets (gone is the $1 charge just to validate your credit card!)
